How we have chosen to manage our orchard:
Mowing and trimming
We don't use weedkillers on the strip under the trees - instead we mow and then use an electric weed-eater and hedge-trimmer.
Cutting the root-runners
The hedgetrimmer cuts the prolific root-runners - and occasionally the irrigation pipe!
... and the result
It's great not to have to use chemicals - it does take a bit longer - but it's worth it.
We do use a copper spray before the trees have leafed up in the spring. After that we don't re-spray till the same time the following year.
