Our harvest and beyond....
From tree to stored nuts
In the field
The hazelnuts fall off the trees (though you can shake the trees to make the most of a collection run). We rake them into rows and pick then up using a vacuum nut harvester towed behind the tractor
In the sorting shed
The field debris is first cleared on a grid then using a vacuum-powered sorter.
We then separate the clean nuts from those still with a husk (and deal with them later)
Ready for the dryer
The clean nuts are finally sorted into trays ready for an initial fan dry overnight at least.
Then into the fan-ventilated storage shed til we need them
From stored nuts to nut butter
Cracking the nuts ...
We used to do this by hand - not at all practical for the amount we need processed
to roast and make ...
Next step: roast , remove the final fine brown skin on the kernels, then put them into the magic machine!
